The Biden administration has announced an extension of immigration

 

protections for Salvadorans. This decision serves to protect one of the largest immigrant populations in the United States from the anticipated policies of the incoming Trump administration, which prioritized mass deportations. On Friday, the administration extended temporary humanitarian protections for over 230,000 long-term residents from El Salvador, who were concerned about the potential loss of their work permits under the new administration. Advocates for immigrants and various lawmakers had been pressing the Department of Homeland Security to renew the temporary protected status for Salvadorans, established under a 1990 law designed to prevent deportation to countries facing conflict or natural disasters. The protections for Salvadorans were set to expire on March 9, shortly after Trump assumed office. The Department of Homeland Security has granted an 18-month extension, which will conclude on September 9, 2026. This approval, occurring just ten days before Inauguration Day, aims to shield a significant immigrant group from an administration that has expressed intentions to deport them. During his first term, Trump attempted to end protections for Salvadorans and other groups, labeling their countries as “s---hole” nations and arguing that the temporary status had been prolonged unnecessarily. Although legal challenges hindered his efforts, he was widely anticipated to allow these protections to lapse this year as he prepared for a mass-deportation initiative.
