Trump has expressed that he desires access to Ukraine's rare earth elements as a prerequisite for extending additional support.

President Donald Trump expressed on Monday his desire to negotiate with Ukraine for access to the nation's rare earth elements as a prerequisite for the continuation of U.S. support in its conflict with Russia. During a press briefing in the Oval Office, Trump highlighted that the United States has provided more military and economic aid to Ukraine than its European allies, stating, “We’re looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they’re going to secure what we’re giving them with their rare earth and other things.” He indicated that he has received indications from the Ukrainian government of their willingness to engage in such an agreement, which would grant the U.S. access to these vital resources essential for the modern high-tech economy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of U.S. involvement in discussions regarding Ukraine, asserting that any negotiations with Russia that exclude his country would be unacceptable. Trump reiterated his commitment to achieving a resolution to the conflict, noting ongoing discussions aimed at ending the war, and expressed his determination to ensure the security of rare earth materials in the context of U.S. financial contributions to Ukraine.
