Marianne Williamson Declares Ambitious Candidacy for D.N.C. Chair

Marianne Williamson, the self-help author who has previously made two unsuccessful attempts for the Democratic presidential nomination, announced on Thursday her intention to enter the race for chair of the Democratic National Committee. In an open letter addressed to the committee's members, Ms. Williamson emphasized the necessity for the Democratic Party to grasp the "emotional" appeal of President-elect Donald J. Trump and to generate the energy required to counteract it.

At 72 years of age, Ms. Williamson faces significant challenges in her pursuit of the party chair position, as several party officials, including former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, are also vying for the role. Current chair Jaime Harrison has opted not to seek re-election, making Ms. Williamson the first woman to officially declare her candidacy.

In a recent interview, she attributed the Democratic Party's lackluster performance in the November elections to an "insider-club mentality," which she believes contributed to the Republicans gaining control of both the White House and Congress. She expressed her intention to provide a remedy for the party's "institutional resistance to anyone outside their predetermined list of insiders." If elected, she plans to embark on a national listening tour to engage with voters about their economic concerns.

"The Democratic Party must descend from its elevated, elite position and genuinely converse with the American populace," she stated. A progressive advocate, Ms. Williamson has previously supported reparations for slavery and proposed the establishment of a U.S. Department of Peace. She garnered attention during the 2020 Democratic presidential primary for several notable debate moments but withdrew from the race prior to the New Hampshire primary. In February, she suspended her second presidential campaign after securing a distant third place.
