FIFA is planning to increase the prize money for the 2026 World Cup after concerns were raised about the rising costs for teams in the US, Canada and Mexico editions.
FIFA has also faced criticism from fans over concerns about rising travel costs.Final approval is anticipated shortly.FIFA has reportedly reached a preliminary agreement to boost the prize money for the upcoming 2026 World Cup after various national football associations highlighted worries about increasing expenses. The definitive decision regarding the enhanced funding is expected to be ratified during a FIFA Council meeting scheduled in Vancouver later this week. This development follows complaints from numerous countries that the high costs of travel, accommodation, logistics, and taxes in the United States could result in financial deficits, even if teams achieve strong results in the competition. FIFA had previously announced a record prize fund of $727 million, with each of the 48 participating teams guaranteed at least $10.5 million and the champions receiving $50 million. However, following recent negotiations, the governing body is now looking to further augment this amount. “Ahead of a Fifa Council meeting in Vancouver, Canada, on 28 April 2026, Fifa can confirm it is in discussions with associations around the world to increase available revenues. This includes a proposed increase of financial contributions to all qualified teams for the Fifa World Cup 2026 and of development funding available to all 211 member associations,” The Guardian quoted a FIFA spokesperson said in a statement.
